Description

Gruff Rhys of the Welsh rock group Super Furry Animals explores a little-known side of his family history as only he can in this fusion of fantasy and documentary. In the 19th Century, there was a small but steady exodus of Welshmen who left their homeland to South America, resulting in a Welsh-speaking colony in Patagonia. Rhys became aware of this only after studying his family tree and discovering he had two distant relatives who'd made their way to South America -- one an accused killer who fled the country to protect his freedom in the late 1800s, the other a musician who fused Latin music with Welsh traditional sounds and folk-rock in the 1970s. Rhys decides he should travel to Patagonia to find out more about Welsh/South American relations, and being a member of Super Furry Animals, he chooses to teleport himself across the continents using a magic helmet that looks like a prop from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Accompanied by a giant penguin, Rhys meets with some of the Welsh speakers in Patagonia and even makes music with them, finding a common cultural thread liking two very different cultures.
